Description: Granted to a 2nd or 3rd year student in the Bachelor of Nursing Program who intends to pursue a career on Prince Edward Island, who actively volunteers in the healthcare field and demonstrates an exceptional sense of compassion and care.
Background: Gwendolyn O'Brien Reid (Atherton), a proud Islander, has dedicated more than 50 years t a distinguished career in nursing. A 1960 graduate and member of the PEI Hospital Alumni Association, she began her education at Prince of Wales College, one of the founding institutions of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and later earned her Bachelor of Nursing (BN) and Master of Education (MEd) from UNB. She moved off Island to pursue her career, spending 25 years in St. John, where she lived and taught at the St. John School of Nursing under the name Atherton, the surname of her first husband and shared by her children. She returned to Prince Edward Island in 2006. Throughout her career, Ms. Reid demonstrated the compassion, skill and commitment that define the nursing profession. Coming fro ma family dedicated to service, her lifelong work has given her a profound appreciation for the critical role burses play in delivering high-quality care and supporting the well-being of individuals and communities.
