The Department of Pathology & Microbiology has modified its three-year residency program by establishing a combined MVSc/Residency training program in any one of the broad disciplines of pathology or microbiology. The combined program is aimed at enhancing scholarships and the competitiveness of veterinarians, providing advanced training, and helping to develop teaching and communication skills.

The MVSc degree component is a two-year, non-thesis (professional) Master’s track program for veterinarians in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, or microbiology. The program provides advanced training and expertise through courses in macroscopic and surgical pathology, in clinical biochemistry, cytology and hematology, or in clinical bacteriology, parasitology or virology. Students are expected to participate as laboratory instructors in DVM courses. The program also includes a small research project leading to a publishable manuscript. Students work with faculty experienced in research, graduate training, and diagnostic activities.

The program in anatomic or clinical pathology allows successful students in the MVSc program to devote their third year to residency training. This enables them to fulfil the requirements for eligibility for the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). Residents work with eight anatomic pathologists, four clinical pathologists, and three fish pathologists in an academic and diagnostic setting. The majority of the pathologists are Board-certified. In addition to their diagnostic duties, residents participate actively in the undergraduate teaching program. Involvement in other academic activities is strongly encouraged.
