PhD student Logan MacIntyre will give a presention entitled "Mining for 'chemical gold': The role of natural products in 21st century antibiotic discovery" at the November Research on Tap event. Presentation description: "It should come as no shock that we find ourselves in the antibiotic resistance era and that many drugs currently used to treat infection are becoming ineffective. Discovering new antibiotics forms part of the solution to this crisis and in response, many scientists have turned to perhaps the most historically prolific producers of antibiotic drugs - bacteria and fungi. This presentation will cover the challenges associated with modern antibiotic discovery, the untapped potential of bacteria and fungi and future directions for this field of research." The event will take place at The Wave (campus pub) in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre on November 16 at 6:30 pm. Any questions or comments may be directed to gsa@upei.ca.
