"Veterinary medicine is a super-interesting puzzle with many creative solutions."
What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?
I'm from Halifax, Nova Scotia and was initially offered a Masters' student position at UPEI, studying equine behaviour with the Atlantic Veterinary College's Health Management department. I applied to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program while completing my Master of Science, and deferred my acceptance until I completed my MSc degree.
What do you find unique and interesting about the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program?
To me, veterinary medicine is a mix of a super-interesting puzzle with many creative solutions. I really enjoy the “puzzle” aspect of veterinary medicine, and I'm also very passionate about animals and their welfare. This program is a great fit for me!
What kinds of support have you received during your time here from UPEI students, staff, and faculty members?
I find my classmates to be very supportive of each other! Everyone shares notes and helpful tips and tricks that work for them, or any insights on specific topics or courses. They're always willing to commiserate with one another when needed. The faculty and support staff at AVC always go above and beyond to ensure that we have everything we need to succeed in not only this program, but in our future careers!
"Prince Edward Island itself is such a hidden gem! Islanders are such lovely and welcoming people and are always willing to offer help when its needed. Those sentiments are very present in the UPEI community as well."
What kinds of opportunities have you experienced because you're studying at UPEI, or because of the Island location?
I’ve had many opportunities to attend conferences and symposiums to present my research and learn about advancements in veterinary medicine while studying at UPEI. I’ve also had the invaluable opportunity to work as a student assistant in the Large Animal Hospital at the Atlantic Veterinary College, which has enabled me to learn and hone new skills and study large animal medicine in a very hands-on environment.
What's unique about UPEI, and Prince Edward Island, in your experience?
Prince Edward Island itself is such a hidden gem! Islanders are such lovely and welcoming people and are always willing to offer help when its needed. Those sentiments are very present in the UPEI community as well.
What would you tell a student considering the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program?
DO IT! Imposter syndrome is a real issue that students and professionals face in veterinary medicine. There’s always a niggling feeling that you may not be good enough (even when you are), but you never know until you try. Chase your dream—the animals need you!
What are your general plans after graduation?
After graduation, I hope to complete an internship at a busy equine practice. Following that, I hope to complete a residency in sports medicine and rehabilitation with a focus on equine patients.
