Lead Student Assistant - Experiential Education and English Language Centre - Student Experience Hub
$16.60 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
April 15 to August 30, 2024
The English Language Centre is seeking applicants for a lead student assistant position. The English Language Centre hosts international and Canadian groups (high schools and universities) for short-term customized English language programs. The lead student assistant is responsible for assisting with the planning and running of program activities for the visiting students. The position will be full-time for the spring and summer with the possibility of an extension in the fall semester at part-time hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet students and/or guests in a friendly manner, answering inquiries and directing people to the appropriate staff person
- Collaborate with the program staff to align activities with academic content
- Assist with conceptualizing, planning, leading and budgeting for English Language Program socio-cultural activities
- Assist with providing support and mentorship to a small team of student assistants
- Provide mentorship and academic support for the visiting students
- Assist with organizing transportation, booking tickets
- Assist with maintenance of department social media
- Performing other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience in a similar role and familiarity with a post-secondary environment
- Strong leadership skills; ability to adapt quickly to situations
- Ability to lead a small team of student assistants
- Ability to liaise with supervising staff
- Experience organizing events
- Strong computer skills with a keen eye for detail
- Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in both a team environment and independently
- Be willing to work occasional evenings and/or weekends
- A customer-service orientation
- Be comfortable engaging with students and guests from diverse backgrounds who have varying language proficiencies
- Cross-cultural experience
- Ideally, the candidate is an undergraduate student with second or third year standing
Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
