The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), located at 550 University Avenue in Charlottetown, PEI, invites applications for a term position to November 30, 2023, with possibility for renewal pending budgetary approval, in the Equine Ambulatory Service with a focus on sports and preventive medicine. This position will be a clinical veterinary professional or FA2 step 1-5 level, depending on qualifications and experience.

The AVC is committed to teaching, research, and service, and is fully accredited by the CVMA and AVMA. The AVC is the regional veterinary college for Atlantic Canada. There are ~272 DVM students, ~55 graduate students, 85 full-time faculty, and a professional and technical team of ~250 dedicated individuals (including full- and part-time). The teaching hospital and its ancillary facilities are modern and well equipped. The ambulatory service is team orientated and focused on a positive work environment.

Qualifications:

Qualifications for this position include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from a college of veterinary medicine accredited by the AVMA and CVMA. The applicant must also be currently eligible for licensure by the Prince Edward Island Veterinary Medical Association. Details on eligibility can be found at http://www.peivma.com/.

Applicants must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to work effectively in a team-centered environment and provide outstanding service to our clients. Knowledge of, and experience with the Standardbred industry and lameness would be an asset and if no experience, a willingness to learn is essential.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include clinical service through the provision of primary care to horses in the field, including shared weekend and after-hours emergency service. The current equine ambulatory section offers a variety of services, including, but not limited to: preventive medicine, dentistry, lameness evaluation and treatments, poor-performance evaluation, reproductive management, foal care, etc. The successful candidate will also provide clinical teaching for DVM students and training interns/residents while providing the field service.  There will be no classroom or laboratory instruction associated with this position. 

The salary range will be commensurate with credentials and experience. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.
