Student Assistants (Up to 2 Positions) - Veterinary Teaching Hospital - Atlantic Veterinary College *REPOSTED*
$15.40 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
May 12 to August 16, 2024
The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is seeking applications from interested DVM students to work as Student Assistants in the VTH during the summer months, between May and August 2024. There are up to 2 positions available across a variety of roles in the small and large animal hospitals.
Please note: This competition will also be used to create a casual list for the 2024/2025 Academic term for students interested in working as casual student assistants in the VTH beyond summer 2024.
Positions are available in the following roles with their responsibilities described below each position. All positions are full-time (averaging 37.5 hours/week). Positions would run from mid-May 2024 to mid-August 2024 (finishing prior to start of school year) and may involve a rotating schedule and include evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Client Services
- Working with the front desk team, performing telephone triage, welcoming clients, client communication, general reception duties, admitting patients, scheduling appointments, communicating with the clinic floor, working with medical records (including digitization), invoicing and handling of payments.
OR / MMU
- Working with the OR team in the OR suite: patient prep, maintaining sterility, setup and breakdown of OR, assisting/relieving the circulating nurse in the OR. Working with the Central Sterilization Technicians in the Materials Management Unit: surgical instrument and equipment cleaning, sterilizing and preparation. Assisting with inventory management for the hospital supplies including receiving, filling inventory requests, and distributing to various departments in the SA and LA hospitals.
SA Float
- Assisting in a variety of SA hospital services, including SA Primary Emergency, Community Practice, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Exotics, and others. Assisting with triage, patient assessment and care. Assisting with patient care and client communication. Helping to maintain infection control practices within the hospital and high standards of cleanliness and animal husbandry.
ICU
- Working with the ICU team to support patient care of critical patients in the SA ICU, including patients from various small animal hospital services. Helping to maintain infection control practices within the hospital and high standards of cleanliness and animal husbandry.
LA Float
- Assisting in a variety of LA hospital services, including LA Medicine, LA Surgery and Theriogenology. Assisting with patient care and helping to maintain infection control practices within the hospital and high standards of cleanliness and animal husbandry. May also include assisting with field services - AES and Farm Service.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preference given to candidates who are currently 1st, 2nd or 3rd year DVM students
- Previous veterinary clinical experience preferred
- Must possess a strong work ethic and accountability with good written and verbal communication skills
- Must be able to commit to work in a full-time capacity for the duration of the summer period
Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
