Student Laboratory Assistant - Department of Diagnostics Services - Atlantic Veterinary College
$15.40 per hour (Plus 4% vacation pay)

The Department of Diagnostic Services at the Atlantic Veterinary College is seeking applications for a student laboratory assistant position to work on a rotating schedule with two other student assistants.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Bacteriology
- Reception and preparation of specimens for culture, including primary culture of specimens, transferring culture plates, sub-culturing, and inoculating of biochemical tests and plates, while using aseptic techniques under the direction of a technologist
- Other laboratory and clerical duties may be assigned as required
- The successful applicant will be required to work on Sundays and holidays, approximately 1-5 hours per weekend and 1-3 hours per holiday depending on workload
- Additional hours (approximately 2 hours per day) during the week) may be available based on the successful candidate’s interest, departmental needs, and budgetary constraints.
Post-Mortem
- Responsible for admitting submissions to post-mortem
- Responding to phone calls and assisting the pathologist with post-mortems when required
- Working with fresh animal tissue
- The successful applicant will be required to work 6 hours per weekend
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preference will be given to DVM students who have completed first year of the DVM Program or to DVM students who have completed the second year of the DVM program
Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
