As a crucial member of the Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre (CLSC) team, the Simulation Operations Specialist plays a key role in supporting the simulation curriculum delivery.

The position will report directly to the Simulation Program Assistant Managers and matrix dotted line reporting to the Biomedical Engineering Technologist of the Clinical Learning Simulation Centre (CLSC) within the Faculty of Medicine (FoM). The purpose and primary role of the Simulation Operations Specialist is to oversee and assist in the daily operations of specialized clinical simulations utilized in the CLSC and in active healthcare facilities across Prince Edward Island. Possessing a broad spectrum of knowledge and experience, the Simulation Operations Specialist plays an integral role supporting the Biomedical Engineering Technologist in the planning, development, and implementation of a wide variety of technologies, simulation spaces, and equipment including 3D printing initiatives, custom simulation aids, task trainers, and tools. The incumbent provides technical direction and management support for simulation operations, including preparation and maintenance of simulation technologies, clinical training systems, task trainers, and various other equipment. 

The Simulation Operations Specialist will assist the simulation staff with the day-to-day operations of the CLSC. This role is broad in scope and includes elements of managing and maintaining simulation equipment, coordinating simulation resources to meet the needs and curriculums of academic learners, planning and effectively managing time to accomplish tasks, including preparing for simulation sessions. This position liaises and maintains positive relationships with all stakeholder groups utilizing CLSC resources providing operational expertise in simulation delivery.

The Simulation Operations Specialist must possess the ability to work under pressure and think critically in a fast-paced environment, set priorities, work on multiple projects simultaneously, and demonstrate excellent written communication skills and the proven ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision making. This position will also serve as an internal resource to all groups within the CLSC and simulation users. The Simulation Operations Specialist will also assist in compiling, analyzing, and visualizing data for annual reports using Excel, and SharePoint to support data-driven insights and decision-making. The position will also track, process, and maintain records of booking processes, ensuring accurate scheduling and efficient reporting. 

This position liaises with collaborative disciplines utilizing the center and other healthcare locations to facilitate simulation-based curriculum and education. The Simulation Operations Specialist will work with CLSC leadership and staff to develop the capabilities of the Simulation Centre, identify opportunities for improvement, and improve CLSC operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports the Simulation Program Manager, Simulation Program Assistant Manager, Biomedical Engineering Technologist and Faculty to schedule and coordinate simulation resources to meet the needs of learners and healthcare professionals within the CLSC and in all Acute Care healthcare facilities across Prince Edward Island.
  • Create custom, high-fidelity simulation task trainers and anatomical models.
  • Support large and complex simulation initiatives that have a provincial scope with a team of simulation operations specialists, facilitators and learners. 
  • Prepare rooms for simulation session including performing moulage on manikins. 
  • Operate simulation equipment during simulation activities. 
  • Support continual data collection of student and faculty utilization of simulation center.
  • Provide educational workshops to staff, clinical faculty, and students on CLSC policies and procedures to ensure safe usage of simulation equipment.
  • Assist the Simulation Program Assistant Managers with maintaining a clean and fully stocked simulation center. 
  • Facilitate simulation equipment care and maintenance, including troubleshooting as needed.
  • Assisting the Simulation Program Manager with technical and operational systems design, policies, planning, and support for IT-related needs. 
  • Working with leadership and staff to develop the capabilities of the Simulation Centre, evaluate new IT-related equipment, identify opportunities for technological improvement, and improve CLSC operations. 
  • Participating in the development and creation of multimedia resources for students. 
  • Training staff, faculty and students on the use and operation of simulation equipment. 
  • Managing, organizing and archiving video recordings. 
  • Assisting in maintaining the CLSC equipment and supply inventory; and
  • Performing other responsibilities and projects as needed. 
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks on the simulators and associated simulator systems.
  • Assist in diagnosing and correcting problems on the simulators.
  • Diagnose and correct routine problems on the simulators and associated simulator systems.
  • Utilize maintenance management systems to record and track maintenance activities.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Diploma in a Science, Technical or Healthcare field, OR two years' experience in a related field is required. A bachelor's degree in health sciences or computer science is preferred. Three (3) years of specific experience in audiovisual, information technology or computer technology.
  • Experience in the operation, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of computer networks and audio-visual systems in an academic and/or healthcare related field.
  • Ability in providing technical assistance, including the ability to express technical information effectively to non-technical persons.
  • Experience in healthcare simulation considered an asset.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously in fast paced environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work varying hours/days/evening/weekends.  
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills are required. 
  • Position will require moderate lifting and carrying of manikins and supplies. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications including Word, Excel and Power Point, and the Internet.
  • A Simulation Operations Specialists certification from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) is highly preferred for this role.
