Nurse Practitioner - UPEI Health and Wellness Centre
$109,659 - $121,586 per annum, prorated to term, plus $10,778 Market Differential
January 2026 – January 15, 2027 (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding, and departmental requirements)
The UPEI Health & Wellness Centre is seeking a Nurse Practitioner for a 0.8 FTE term position to provide primary care to students, faculty, staff, and their families in a setting that values collaboration, holistic health, and innovation. You will conduct comprehensive assessments, develop care plans, prescribe treatments, and coordinate referrals to specialized services, while partnering with campus resources such as counselling and accessibility services to promote well-being and student success. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform comprehensive patient examinations, including physical and psychosocial assessments, to identify health concerns and risk factors
- Collect and analyze relevant clinical data, such as medical history, collateral information, and social determinants of health
- Order, interpret, and integrate diagnostic tests (e.g. laboratory work, imaging, screenings) to support accurate clinical decision-making
- Establish medical diagnoses based on evidence-based guidelines and clinical judgment, while recognizing and addressing common co-morbid conditions
- Engage patients in shared decision-making to determine an appropriate treatment plan, which may include prescribing medications, initiating therapeutic interventions, and coordinating referrals to specialists or community resources
- Monitor treatment effectiveness and adjust care plans as needed to optimize health outcomes
- Provide individualized counseling on topics such as nutrition, mental health, sexual health, substance use, chronic disease management, and preventive care
- Integrate health promotion strategies into routine clinical encounters to reinforce preventive care and self-management
- Advocate for health literacy by empowering patients to make informed decisions about their care
- Collaborate with campus departments to implement health campaigns and outreach initiatives
- Support peer education initiatives by mentoring student volunteers as needed.
- Stay current with emerging health trends and best practices
- Build and nurture strong collaborative relationships with physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, allied health providers, and campus/community partners to deliver integrated, patient-centered care
- Facilitate clinical team meetings as needed to ensure effective communication, shared decision-making, and alignment on patient care priorities
- Provide mentorship and guidance to nursing staff and health sciences students, fostering a culture of learning, innovation, and professional growth within the clinic
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in Nursing with a Nurse Practitioner specialization approved by the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI
- 5 years of relevant experience in primary care
- Active or eligible for licensure as a Nurse Practitioner with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI
- Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with patients and colleagues to foster trust and understanding
- Skilled in active listening and responding thoughtfully to diverse concerns and needs
- Demonstrated capacity to apply empathy and cultural sensitivity when supporting students/patients from varied backgrounds
- Proven strength in critical thinking and clinical judgment for complex decision-making
- Flexibility to adapt quickly to changing priorities and manage urgent cases effectively
- Competence in conflict resolution, maintaining professionalism and a positive team environment
- Experience in collaborating effectively with inter-professional teams, including physicians, nurses, and mental health professionals
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain composure under pressure and demonstrate resilience in high-stress situations
- Leadership qualities to mentor and guide nursing staff and health sciences students
- Resourcefulness in problem-solving creatively when faced with limited resources or barriers to care
- Dedication to upholding confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of practice
- Strong comfort with technology, including experience with CHR/electronic medical record systems. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) an asset
