Sessional Instructor - Department of History - Faculty of Arts (Fall 2025)
The Department of History and Classics at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a Sessional Instructor for the 2025 Fall Semester. We are seeking an instructor to teach the following course in the Department of History and Classics. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.
Please note: the course offered below will be taught in person, unless otherwise specified as an online course.
HIST 2090-2 – Special Topics: A History of Sport in North America
This course critically examines the history of sport in North America and traces what it has come to mean to its players, administrators, financiers, and followers. Among the central themes addressed are: the amateur ideal, commerce and professionalism; sports and nationalism in Canada and the United States; communicating the game, from the telegraph to TikTok; the meanings of violence and the concussion crisis; whiteness, Indigeneity, and the problem of race. The course combines lectures with group discussion sessions that focus on scholarly literature, film, and primary-source documents in the field of sports history.
PREREQUISITES:None
Lecture: Three hours a week
In-person course: Monday and Wednesday from 14:30 to 15:45 during the Fall Semester 2025.
Qualifications:
Successful applicants will have a graduate degree or a doctoral degree in Canadian or American history. Preference will be given to qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI sessional roster for History and Classics and full-time and term contract Faculty Members of the Academic unit.
