Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island and the Associate Dean of the UPEI Campus, the Medical Director of Simulation will provide leadership in facilitating, evaluating and operating simulation education throughout the Faculty of Medicine.  The incumbent will refine best practices and educational delivery guidelines while engaging with key stakeholders to ensure collaboration and identify partnership opportunities. The incumbent will work with key stakeholders in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University and throughout the University of Prince Edward Island to build and maintain collaborative inter-professional partnerships and activities, leading to the advancement of the simulation portfolio.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration:

  • Develop a provincial strategy for simulation in the Faculty of Medicine which supports UGME, PGME, and CME programs and is aligned with the direction of the Faculty of Medicine and the university
  • Provide leadership support and expertise
  • Ensure plans and initiatives are aligned with emerging trends, the needs of key stakeholders, and the Faculty of Medicine
  • Ensure Simulation is in adherence with the applicable accreditation standards and integrated across the Faculty of Medicine, assisting the Associate Dean, UPEI campus with adhering to accreditation standards
  • Support continuous development of strategic partnerships at provincial, national and international levels
  • Collaborate with the CLSC Director on operational matters, including the administration of national exams

Teaching, Research, and Scholarly Work:

  • Collaborate to define, communicate, and evaluate academic simulation outcomes and priorities within the portfolio consistent with the Memorial curriculum
  • Network and explore potential alliances with the government, international researchers/research chairs, and funding agencies to create a robust simulation strategy
  • Develop strong relationships with current and prospective faculty across the province to inform the strategy for Simulation
  • Memorial's Chair of Clinical Skills a Collaborate with medical school faculty responsible for curriculum to implement and assess appropriate simulation-based learning activities and Standardized Patient exercises consistent with the Memorial University curriculum
  • Provide guidance and expertise to faculty on all aspects of device and computer-based simulation technology
  • Identify opportunities to apply for extramural funding for educational and patient safety-related research
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration with other leading simulation centers to advance simulation research
  • Provide POCUS training to medical learners in the lab as required
  • Collaborate with Memorial University Faculty of Medicine to ensure the delivery of a comparable curriculum
  • Collaborate with Memorial's Chair of Clinical Skills at Memorial University Faculty of Medicine in providing professional development in simulation pedagogy for clinical skills faculty
  • Participate on committees related to the CLSC mandate and provide an annual report
  • Promote and participate in scholarly work\research in simulation
  • Will be onsite and visibly present two days weekly to be consistently available to staff and program needs
  • In addition, the Medical Director will also undertake such other duties or special assignments as may, from time to time, be requested by the Associate Dean or Dean

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
  • Work experience preferable with at least 3-5 years of clinical practice
  • Point of care ultrasound certification would be an asset
  • Experience in medical education and simulation delivery would be an asset
  • Must hold or be eligible to hold a faculty appointment with UPEI and Memorial
