The Department of Accessibility Services at UPEI is seeking an Accessibility Advisor/Learning Strategist to work directly with Accessibility Services in managing student case files and coordinating and facilitating learning support for students. This person will report to the Manager of Accessibility Services, and it will be an essential part of providing services for students with disabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Accessibility Advisor/Learning Strategist, using a case management approach, will provide individualized accommodation and learning strategy plans for students with disabilities based on their functional limitations, learning needs, and recommendations in their accommodation plans. The successful candidate will assist students and provide ongoing support, strategies and techniques to enable students to capitalize on their strengths and remove barriers to learning.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review student medical documentation and implementing approved accommodations (Case Management)
  • Provide learning strategies that recognize the unique learning needs of each student Identifying barriers and providing strategies to minimize impact on learning
  • Provide support with time-management and organization techniques that support student success while learning with executive functioning deficits
  • Possess thorough knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities, and ADHD, and understanding how mental health considerations may influence learning (particularly anxiety)
  • Providing academic coaching, technology training, and assistance with study skills (individual and group work)
  • Collaborate with students to find tools & resources for organization and efficiency
  • Assist students with note-taking and departmental forms
  • Provide support with self-advocacy
  • Communicate with staff, faculty and students' family members when appropriate
  • Design and facilitate learning strategy workshops for students with disabilities as well as the general student body
  • Perform referrals to campus partners/services
  • Meet and work with students in-person and online
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Education or recognized post-secondary program in a related program or discipline and 3-5 years of experience in education or disabilities (MEd is considered an asset)
  • An understanding of appropriate teaching pedagogies, accommodations and inclusive practices is essential
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of learning strategy supports for reading, writing, studying, time management, organization, test taking, math, note taking, and habit formation
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the legal Duty to Accommodate in Post-Secondary Educational settings
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, oral, computer and written English communication skills, with demonstrated proficiency with grammar and composition
  • Demonstrates lived experience as, or experience working with, those who have lived experience in diverse equity deserving groups
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain a high level of confidentiality, diplomacy and judgement with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks amid changing priorities and actively problem-solve and take initiative where appropriate
  • Excellent time management, organization and prioritization skills with the ability to work effectively with others while meeting deadlines
  • A candidate who enhances the diversity of the Accessibility Services team would be an asset
