The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a Sessional Instructor to teach a graduate level environmental ethics course in the newly launched Master of Cleantech Leadership and Transformation (MCLT) program. This course will be offered in the Fall 2025 semester. 

Housed in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the MCLT is an innovative transdisciplinary graduate program that aims to educate and cultivate transformative leaders who bridge traditional and emerging knowledge systems and drive cleantech innovation for a sustainable future. The MCLT’s first cohort is expected to begin in Fall 2025.

Please note: the course offered below will be taught in person, unless otherwise specified as an online course. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

CLT 6201 – Environmental Ethics and Social Responsibility (3 credits)

This course explores key debates concerning: the moral significance of nature; basic moral theories; moral relativism, objectivism, and pragmatism; Indigenous perspectives on human-nature relations, ethical assessment of new technologies including impacts on human health and behavior, biodiversity, water conservation and climate change; the question of why humans have degraded their environments, including economic and political causes; the concepts of space, place, and ecological identity; ethical limitations of economic-driven decision-making and cost-benefit analysis; professional ethics and social responsibility; environmental justice, environmental racism, Reconciliation, and key debates in the ethics of climate change (individual, intergenerational, and international responsibilities; just transitions, geoengineering).

Qualifications:

Successful applicants will have a minimum of a PhD and possess experience teaching environmental ethics and social responsibility. 

Preference will be given to the qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Sessional Roster and full-time and term contract Faculty Members of the Academic unit.
