The Robertson Library at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for an innovative, energetic Academic Librarian, with interest and experience supporting animal, human, and ecosystem health, an aptitude for scholarly repositories, traditional and emerging forms of scholarly dissemination, and a strong service orientation to fill a permanent-track position.

The University of Prince Edward Island is one of Canada’s leading liberal undergraduate institutions. Located in Charlottetown on the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in the traditional district of Epekwitk, UPEI is a central educational, cultural and social institution in the City and the Province. The Robertson Library is the only university library on Prince Edward Island and has a reputation for innovation and supports “open” approaches to information - open-source software development and use, open access, open data, and open education resources.

Over 30 knowledgeable employees – librarians, support staff and student staff – provide users with the excellent resources and services that they need to further their teaching, learning, and research. 

Reporting to the University Librarian, the One Health and Scholarly Communications Librarian will be the liaison librarian for several faculties and departments and will collaborate with colleagues to provide in-depth reference service and instruction to students, graduate students, post-graduate students, faculty and staff and participates in the development and assessment of collections.  They will be the lead in coordinating and providing support for the Robertson Library’s institutional repository and scholarly communications.

As a member of the Robertson Library team, the Librarian engages in professional practice, scholarly and professional development activity, and university, professional, and community service. The individual assumes responsibility for the coordination of the work of their unit, services or projects as required. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. The nature and scope of responsibilities for this and other library positions are expected to change as the Library organization evolves.

Responsibilities:

Professional Practice

  • Integrates equity, diversity, and inclusion in their professional practice
  • Coordinates the work of the Scholarly Communications & Resource Sharing Unit
  • Liaison librarian for the Atlantic Veterinary College, Climate Change and Adaptation, Environmental Studies, and Biology programs:
    • Provides in-depth research consultations for liaison areas
    • Designs instructional materials and delivers instruction in a variety of contexts
    • Selects print and electronic materials to support assigned liaison areas
    • Prepares reports for accreditation and academic program reviews
    • Initiates and maintains contact with faculty in assigned departments and informs them of services and instruction offered to complement research, teaching and learning
  • Provides oversight for the library’s open-access repositories:
    • Supports campus scholars in sharing and preserving their scholarly output, coordinates the deposit of scholarly output in appropriate repositories, and consults on methods for meeting funder and/or publisher requirements
    • Coordinates the creation and maintenance of researcher profiles
    • Coordinates with Academic Units and the Office of Graduate Studies to facilitate the deposit of theses, graduate student projects, and undergraduate honours projects
    • Coordinates, develops, and promotes activities related to the library’s scholarly communication initiatives
    • Supports the campus community in the creation and dissemination of Open Education Resources through Library services and platforms
    • Collaborates with the Digital Initiatives and Systems Unit in supporting our locally hosted repositories
  • Coordinates and manages the work of the Library’s Interlibrary Loan service
  • Collaboratively develops and implements library policies and procedures

Scholarly Activities, Professional Development, and Service

  • Keeps up-to-date on developments in library services, resources and technology and on broader issues that affect the practice of librarianship
  • Engages in scholarly, professional development, and service activities under the terms of the Collective Agreement

Qualifications:

Required

  • An MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution is required.
  • University or health library professional experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of institutional repositories, scholarly communications trends, open access and related issues in the academic environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills consistent with effective campus outreach, including approachability, can-do attitude, and strong collaborative focus
  • A student-centred approach to library services
  • Demonstrated commitment to integrating EDI into services, instruction, collection development, and overall professional practice
  • Experience building productive relationships and working collegially with a diverse population of colleagues, faculty and students
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in an evolving area of librarianship, as evidenced by creative and analytical thinking and problem-solving
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust and accommodate to changing demands within Libraries and academic institutions

Assets

  • A degree or professional experience related to health, climate change or veterinary sciences
  • Knowledge of the One Health approach and its application
  • Familiarity with Indigenous ways of knowing and knowledge seeking
  • Familiarity with funding agencies' and publishers' requirements for the preservation and open access of research outputs
  • Experience using evidence-based health-related bibliographic research tools
  • Experience with collections and subject liaison duties in an academic library
  • Demonstrated project management skills
