BIO 4090-02: Special Topics – Pasteur vs Koch

Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) and Robert Koch (1843–1910) were the two most influential microbiologists in the second half of the 19th century.  Koch, from Germany, discovered the diseases causing organisms of many major infectious diseases, including anthrax, tuberculosis and cholera. Pasteur, from France, discovered ‘pasteurization,’ and he established the basis for antisepsis in surgery. Both were responsible for establishing the germ theory of disease, which had a major impact on medicine, especially the way we treat contagious diseases. Curiously, these two giants of science disliked each other intensely. This course examines how the personal rivalry between Pasteur and Koch reflected major developments in the mid-to late 19th century, including changes in how science was understood, geo-political conflicts in Europe, and European colonial attitudes towards Africa.

There is a field trip portion to this course (1 June – 11 June 2025) during which time students will travel to Paris and Berlin. This course is cross listed with HIST 4090
