Student Research Assistant - Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering
$15.40 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay
May 27 – August 30, 2024
A Student Research Assistant position is available for an undergraduate Engineering student (going into years 3, 4 or 5) with an interest in Sustainable Materials for Sustainable Systems, specifically on a project involving the development of novel alloys for additive manufacturing with an emphasis on reuse and repurposing of critical minerals or critical mineral alternatives. The student will work as part of an interdisciplinary team that will use innovative research tools to develop models and designs for testing and characterization. In addition, the student will gain experience in materials science research that enables them to create, visualize and assess the impact that applied engineering solutions have on equitable communities and a sustainable earth.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The student will learn and use generative AI techniques to investigate novel alloys for additive manufacturing and more electric actuation and generation
- The student will use experimental and CAD techniques to create and build alloy powders for direct metal laser sintering
- The student will use materials characterization techniques to analyze metal printed components for their materials properties and performance
- The student will work as part of an international, interdisciplinary team to experiment with models, prototypes, and strategies for sustainable materials development
- The student will contribute to writing a final report and make a final presentation
- The student will participate in public knowledge dissemination
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Having completed ENGN 1250: Materials Science with a 75% final mark is required
- Having completed ENGN 2360: Mechanics, Materials, and Manufacturing, with a 75% final mark is an asset
- Good overall academic record (cGPA > 3.5 / 4.3) and a strong work ethic
- Ability to work effectively in a team
- Proficiency in interpersonal and written communication is required
- Experience in the area of sustainable engineering is required
- Interest in generative AI, experimental characterization and testing, and life cycle assessment is an asset
- Experience and interest in engineering leadership are assets
