The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at the Atlantic Veterinary College requires a Dispensary and Supplies Technician to lead procurement and supply of pharmaceuticals for the VTH, in addition to completing the daily duties required for the smooth running of Dispensary as a hospital service. This will typically be weekdays, however the successful applicant may occasionally be required to work on weekends and UPEI closures, as required to meet hospital needs. This position will work directly with the Dispensary Technician to accomplish the following tasks:
DUTIES:
Assisting staff and clinicians with dispensing and prescription needs for the veterinary hospital’s inpatients and outpatients
Working with various software products (RxWorks, Cubex and Colleague) and inventory management cabinets in the VTH with respect to pharmaceuticals and supplies
Maintaining accurate record keeping in patient’s medical records, in the hospital’s electronic inventory system, and in the hospital’s controlled drug log
Procuring, maintaining and receiving pharmaceuticals supplies, and liaising with the many suppliers to ensure pharmaceuticals availability needs are met for the 24/7/365 large and small animal hospital operations
Creating and monitoring POs and blanket purchases as per the established UPEI procurement processes, and liaising with Hospital Administration regarding the impact on operating budgets
Maintaining, stocking and distribution of pharmaceuticals within the Dispensary, as well as to the hospital’s dispensing cabinets
Performing cycle counts of all pharmaceuticals in the hospital and reviewing and reporting discrepancies in accordance with hospital policies
Maintain pharmaceutical control levels in the Dispensary and throughout the VTH
Maintain accurate pharmaceuticals pricing in the hospital’s electronic medical records system
Work with the Systems and Inventory Manager to facilitate accurate inventory counts of pharmaceuticals in Dispensary and throughout the hospital
Reviewing and preparing clinician prescriptions, as well as one-over-one review of prescriptions prepared by other dispensary staff and clinicians
Accurately invoice clients for prescriptions
Providing thorough client communication and medication counselling regarding their pet’s prescriptions and refills
Assisting in repackaging and compounding pharmaceutical products and fluid preparations for patient prescriptions and in-hospital use
Preparing chemotherapeutic treatments for in-hospital administration, following hospital standard operating procedures and using safe handling practices
Must be able to respond creatively to balance the procurement requirements of the hospital with the potentially conflicting demands of hospital users and clients
Must be conscientious with regard to procedure, capable of working under pressure and interacting professionally with other departments within the hospital
Preparing and invoicing internal department requisitions for the university
Other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Grade 12 graduation plus completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program or pharmacy degree preferred, or completion of a recognized program in a related area and equivalent experience may be considered
Pharmacy technician license recognized in PEI or another Canadian province, preferred
Minimum two (2) years relevant work experience in a dispensary or pharmacy setting, or an equivalent combination of work and training experience.
Experience procuring and maintaining inventory, in particular pharmaceuticals, is required
Experience of identifying opportunities for savings and efficient inventory systems, as well as maintaining good supplier relationships
Experience in basic compounding and prescription processing
Strong computer and word processing abilities with experience using electronic medical records being an asset
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated abilities with client communication and strong customer service skills
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Must be self-motivated and reliable
Must be able to work as part of a team, but must also be able to work independently
Computer proficiency in pharmaceutical inventory management software would be considered an asset
