Hainan University is a comprehensive key university formed by a merger with the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture in August 2007. It is jointly administered by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial People's Government.

Hainan province, located in the southernmost tip of China, is well-known as the most famous and unique tropical tourist destination in China. Haikou, known also as the 'Coconut City', is the capital of Hainan Province, and it is the political, economic, cultural and commercial center of the province.
