Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for October 9–15 are Charlotte Branchflower (women’s rugby) and Max VanWiechen (men’s soccer).

Women’s rugby fullback Charlotte Branchflower is a third-year science student from Halifax, Nova Scotia. She tied for a game-high 10 points in a crucial 25-22 win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women on October 13. The win secured the Panthers’ place in the AUS Final, which they will host on Wednesday, October 25 at 2 pm. Branchflower finished the regular season with a league-leading 46 points on 20 conversions and two penalty kicks.

“Charlotte has been a huge part of the team’s success this season,” said head coach James Voye. “She has been completely locked in with her kicking game, especially during the past three weeks when she went a perfect 8-for-8 at home against the Saint Mary's University Huskies, and then scored on three conversions against Acadia and two conversions and two penalty kicks against St. FX when we defeated both teams on the road.”

Third-year soccer centre back Max VanWiechen continues to be a steady force on defence. The arts student from Montague, PEI displayed leadership throughout the tough 3-0 defeat to the Saint Mary’s University Huskies on October 15.

“Max was a tremendous leader in our game against Saint Mary’s University,” said head coach Lewis Page. “He put his body on the line numerous times in search of a must-win game.”
