AVC alum awarded 2023 Atlantic Award of Excellence
Dr. Lesley Steele, a graduate of the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), is the winner of the College’s 2023 Atlantic Award of Excellence in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Care.
Dr. Dominique Griffon, dean of AVC, presented the award to Dr. Steele at the closing ceremony of the Atlantic Provinces Veterinary Conference in Halifax on April 21. Dr. Steele was nominated by Shelley Wood, an employee of one of her many veterinary hospitals.
Dr. Steele began her veterinary medicine journey at the AVC in 1993, with a vision of becoming a large animal veterinarian. Graduating in 1997, she successfully worked in the large animal field but then turned her eyes to small animals. While her passion was caring for animals, she found her entrepreneurial side and created the Steele Veterinary Group; she is now the owner of six clinics in the Atlantic provinces. She also founded Virtual Veterinary Solutions, which is integrating cutting-edge AI technology for diagnostics for pet bloodwork.
“Dr. Steele’s dedication to advancing technology and innovation in veterinary medicine proves she is way ahead of her time,” said Dr. Griffon. “She is propelling our profession into the future while helping to meet the unique needs of pet owners.”
Dr. Steele has served as a representative of the Newfoundland Veterinary Medical Association. She has also guest lectured at the AVC, where she is excited to share her inspiring story with the next generation of veterinarians.
“Dr. Steele stands as an exemplary figure within the veterinary profession,” said Wood in her nomination letter. “Her unwavering commitment to advancing animal care and veterinary practices is evident through her innovative initiatives and tireless advocacy for the welfare of animals.”
