Ashley McCutcheon and Kyree Thompson named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week

Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for November 11–17, 2024, are Ashley McCutcheon (women’s hockey) and Kyree Thompson (men’s basketball).

McCutcheon, a fourth-year business student from Kitchener, Ontario, came through in the clutch for the Panthers, netting a crucial late-game goal on November 15 against a tough St. Francis Xavier University squad to force overtime and secure a valuable point for the team.

“Ashley was great last week,” said head coach Sean Fisher. “She was effective in all three zones. Her compete level was high, and she was relentless on the puck and tough in the scoring area.”

Thompson, a third-year arts student from North Preston, Nova Scotia, was a spark off the bench during the November 15 home game, averaging an impressive 19.0 points on 52.4 per cent shooting (46.2 per cent from three), leading the Panthers to two wins over the Saint Mary’s University Huskies.

“Kyree continues to grow as a player on both ends of the court, and his efforts last weekend were key contributors to our success,” said head coach Darrell Glenn.
