Lauren Rainford and Kyree Thompson named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week

Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for January 20–26, 2025, are Lauren Rainford (women’s basketball) and Kyree Thompson (men’s basketball).

Rainford, a fifth-year arts student from Toronto, Ontario, played very strong games on January 24 and 25 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. She averaged a team-high 25.0 points along with 4.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in a weekend split with the Acadia University Axewomen.

“Lauren had a strong weekend for the team in a very tough split at Acadia,” said head coach Matt Gamblin. “She showed leadership and took over when the team needed it. She’s also showing a lot of diversity in her offensive game, which will be needed as she’ll be the primary focus for other teams down the stretch.”

Thompson, an arts student from North Preston, Nova Scotia, continues to play well since stepping into the starting lineup. In a weekend split with the Acadia University Axemen, the third-year guard averaged 18.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 blocks.

“Kyree continues to shine in the starting lineup,” said head coach Darrell Glenn. “His offensive efficiency is improving, as he put up a career-high 25 points Saturday afternoon.”
