The Department of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Human Rights and the Office of Research Services, both at UPEI, are pleased to announce that the University has been selected to participate in the Dimensions: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Canada recognition program.

Dimensions Canada is a federal initiative administered by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS) that aims to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in Canada’s post-secondary research ecosystem. Launched in 2019 and inspired in part by the UK’s Athena SWAN program, it focuses on identifying and addressing systemic barriers, promoting inclusive research excellence, and transforming institutional culture to support underrepresented groups.

UPEI has already demonstrated its commitment to EDI in research by signing the Dimensions Charter, Now, as part of the recognition program, the University will join a national cohort of post-secondary institutions in a ten-month learning journey, from June 2025 until March 2026, to assess the current state of EDI in its research environment and develop a plan to address existing gaps.

Upon completing the program, UPEI will be eligible to apply for formal recognition of initiatives that reduce systemic barriers, reshape structures and policies that contribute to inequity, and strengthen its commitment to an inclusive and diverse research culture.

“We anticipate that participation in this program will help enhance working conditions for researchers, help improve institutional culture, enrich the quality and impact of research through diverse perspectives, and strengthen UPEI’s ability to attract both research funding and diverse talent,” said Dr. Sobia Ali-Faisal, Director of the UPEI Department of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Human Rights.

UPEI researchers may access the Dimensions logo in this Sharepoint folder if they wish to include it in their email signature. To learn more about UPEI’s participation in the program, please contact Dr. Ali-Faisal at sali@upei.ca.
