Rachel Richards, a standout defender for the UPEI Women’s Hockey Panthers, has been selected as one of 22 student-athletes nationwide for the 2026–27 cohort of the Hockey Canada Creating Coaches Program.

Hockey Canada and U SPORTS recently announced this year’s incoming cohort of student-athletes from all four U SPORTS conferences who will participate in the program, which is designed to increase the number of women coaching hockey in Canada.

Launched in 2021 through a partnership between Hockey Canada, U SPORTS, and the Hockey Canada Foundation, Creating Coaches provides opportunities for current U SPORTS women’s hockey players to receive training, mentorship, education, and an honorarium as assistant coaches for girls’ hockey teams in their respective communities.

The initiative focuses on expanding leadership and coaching pathways for women in hockey.

Richards will receive hands-on mentorship and training as an assistant coach for a local U13, U15, or U18 girls’ hockey team while continuing her university playing career. She will also obtain professional development through monthly connect sessions, coaching education, and an honorarium to help support her transition behind the bench.

“Rachel’s selection to the Hockey Canada Creating Coaches Program is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to her leadership, commitment, and love of the game,” said Jane Vessey, Director of UPEI Athletics and Recreation. “We are proud to see her represent UPEI while gaining valuable coaching experience that will help shape the next generation of female hockey players. Opportunities like this highlight the leadership culture within our women’s hockey program and the positive impact our student-athletes have on and off the ice.”

Congratulations, Rachel!
