SEASON PREVIEW: UPEI Men’s Soccer Panthers eyeing rebound season in 2023
With a fresh start and outlook, the UPEI Panthers are looking ahead to bigger and better things in 2023.
It’s typically an annual tradition seeing the Panthers celebrate a postseason berth, but 2022 was an outlier, as the team finished the year with a 1-9-2 record and missed the playoffs for only the third time in a decade.
For players like Jonathan MacKenzie, who already experienced the thrill of playoff soccer, the drive to get back there and compete for a championship is a huge motivator.

"After my four-month exchange program I knew I wanted to return to UPEI, and soon!"
What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?
I am from Central Village, St. Catherine, Jamaica. I first came to UPEI on an exchange program all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (this is after I lost my luggage on the way here as it was my first time traveling and I didn't "mark" my bag and subsequently missed my connecting flight! But that's a whole other story) in August 2014. I was here to complete one semester of my undergraduate degree in Business Administration but after my four-month exchange, I knew I wanted to return to UPEI, and soon.

UPEI Women’s Soccer Panthers add scoring punch in midfielder Hannah Loeb
The UPEI Women’s Soccer Panthers have secured a commitment from Campbell River, British Columbia native Hannah Loeb for the 2023–24 season.
Loeb’s unique path to the UPEI Panthers is a source of pride for her. Throughout her life, she rarely shied away from a challenge, especially on the soccer field. Over the past five years, she played for the under-18 Campbell River Thunder boys’ team, where she emerged as a leader and one of its best players.
Call to participate in the UPEI Action Plan Advisory Group
The University published the report, “University of Prince Edward Island Review” (the “UPEI Review”), in June 2023, after Rubin Thomlinson LLP conducted a review of University workplace policies, practices, and procedures. The UPEI Review lists a number of recommendations, as well as calls for “a comprehensive plan to address the many issues that require remediation” that needs “the input of many stakeholders within the University.” (p. 73)
