Various municipalities in Canada have developed legislation to address public safety concerns about dogs that bite. Speakers at this workshop will discuss problems associated with legislation that bans specific breeds and provide information on alternative approaches to the issue of dangerous dogs. The workshop will offer information on identifying dangerous dogs, risk factors for dog bites, the effectiveness of interventions, and the impact of breed–specific legislation on dogs and humane societies. In August, the Physics department moved its teaching labs from the Duffy Science Centre to the new School of Sustainable Design Engineering building. Many items were identified as surplus and are currently being stored in DSC 309. A general "for use on UPEI" pickup took place October, but this pickup opportunity is for any purpose (home use, disassembly for parts, etc.) as items available after this week will be disposed of. Open to all students, staff, faculty, etc. Examples include old electronics equipment such as analog meters, glassware, metal weights and stands, scales, and some office items. Please contact Lisa Steele (ldsteele@upei.ca) if you cannot make the open session on Wednesday. There are some limited opportunities to arrange something on Thursday or Friday.

Please join us for Theology on Tap at the Pourhouse. Local educator, Joanne Mawhinney, will speak on "Seeing God in the Cosmos." It will be an enlightening discussion of science and religion, faith and reason. Doors open at 6:30 pm with the talk at 7:00 pm. 19+

All UPEI students are invited to enjoy a Festive Coffee and Cocoa Study Break during the exam period, presented by the Office of the President. Drop by the concourse in the W. A. Murphy Student Centre between 1 and 2 pm where the team from the Office of the President will serve up cookies, coffee and hot chocolate.

At the Chaplaincy Centre, thoughts are with the students during exam time, their success, and yes, of course, the chili dinner. On the first two days of exams—Wednesday and Thursday, December 7 and 8 between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm—a chili dinner is served at the Chaplaincy Centre, free for the students. About 300 students show up each day with smiles and conversation on this busy week. We are looking for faculty and staff to help out and provide encouragement for students on their exams. If you are able to volunteer some time, sign up to volunteer here. 

The University of Prince Edward Island and the UPEI Alumni Association invite everyone to our annual New Year's Levee, this year in a new location!  Join us from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in UPEI's new School of Sustainable Design Engineering building for this festive event to wish each other a "Happy New Year!"  Lunch and cash bar provided. 

UPEI graduate students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the annual GSA winter social: The Ugly Holiday Sweater Social, taking place December 10 from 6 pm - 9 pm in the AVC Learning Commons.  The night will have food, a cash bar, door prizes and prizes for ugliest holiday sweater, and we will announce the recipients of the GSA Faculty and Staff awards. 

Symposium on Policy Development, Program Implementation Perspectives on Complexities and Opportunities Dr. Brian Evans, Chief Food Safety Officer and Chief Veterinary Officer for Canada John Knubley, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food Canada Simon Kennedy, Senior Associate Deputy Minister, Industry Canada Three federal deputy ministers will present on"Adapting to Current Realities in Policy Development and Program Implementation" in the Canadian federal government. This will include an opportunity for UPEI students and faculty to learn about and to interact with our visitors on policy development, as well as public service workforce renewal and employment prospects.
