UPEI/CMS Math Camp 2012

Math Camp is organized by the Dept of Mathematics and Statistics, and co-sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Society. The annual event will welcome a group of 20 students in grades 10-11 coming from 10 high schools in the province. The camp offers faculty sessions on various mathematical topics, problem-solving competitions including math relays, as well as some recreational activities in the evenings.

“Newcomers Play Hockey” Skills Sessions presented by UPEI Women’s Hockey

The UPEI Panthers were the recipient of a $10,000 RBC Play Hockey grant, and will use the funding to expand a program originally started by Hockey PEI and PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada. Members of the UPEI Panthers will instruct youth who are new to the country and to the game of hockey during regularly scheduled skills sessions. Members of UPEI Women’s hockey team, Head Coach Bruce Donaldson, and RBC Royal Bank Vice-President Lisette Michaud-Carrier and newcomers to Canada participating in the program will be at the official program launch.

Kitchen Party

The UPEI women’s teams of basketball, hockey, rugby and soccer are hosting a 2nd Kitchen Party at Murphy’s Community Centre on June 2, 2012. Again this year, lobster is the main course with the players from the four teams serving up a delightful evening of food, entertainment by Vintage and fun with a silent auction and raffle. The event is a fundraiser for the four teams to help with exhibition play in the upcoming season. Tickets are $45 per person or $400 for a table of ten. Candidate for Research Scientist/Post Doctoral Position Agricultural/Environmental Economist In the Canada Excellence Research Chair Program Jun Yang presents “The Impacts of Animal and Foodborne Diseases on Canadian Household Meat and Seafood Demand” This study is aimed at evaluating the impacts of information about animal and foodborne diseases (AFDs) on Canadian household meat purchasing behavior. Public concerns about food safety issues have been rising worldwide in recent years, possibly because of increases in food contamination and associated deaths. Major foodborne diseases related to meat are Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella and Listeria. Other perceived food safety incidents related to meat such as animal diseases, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and swine flu, have also been seen in recent years.
