The Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee is hosting a PhD Environmental Sciences Research Presentation on Friday, March 13 at 1:30 pm in Duffy Science Centre, Room 204. Sean Landsman, BSc, MSC will present: Connecting Rivers to Oceans: Marine-derived Nutrients in Freshwater Ecosystems. This public presentation is part of Mr. Landsman’s PhD Comprehensive exam and will be followed by an oral examination.

Are you interested in what makes a Passive House different from an R-2000 building, or other energy efficient building techniques? The Environmental Studies and Physics department are sponsoring a showing of the Passive House Revolution Documentary (45 min) and hosting a Q&A panel with local Passive House owners, builders and a representative from the Office of Energy Efficiency of PEI on Thursday, March 26 from 7:00-9:00 pm (storm date, Wednesday, April 1) in AVC, Lecture Theatre A. This event is open to the general public.

The World University Service of Canada (WUSC) local committee of UPEI will put on a night of glow-in-the-dark UFIT and dancing on Sunday, March 22nd in McMillan Hall of the Student Centre. This event is being held to support the Shine A Light Campaign and the work being done to improve education for girls in refugee camps in Malawi through remedial classes, scholarships and solar lights so that they can study after dark. Tickets will be available in advance from event organizers for $5 and at the door for $7. Cheer on your friends as they try to cram years of learning into three minutes! The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a skills development activity which challenges thesis-based graduate students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. The competition is Thursday, March 26 at 7 pm in the Wave. First place wins $200 and a trip to Concordia University to compete in the Regional 3MT. Second place wins $100. Third place wins $50. Jan Coffin, Strategic Research Initiatives Manager, and Dr. William Whelan, professor of physics, will be honoured in thanks for their work to help promote the community of research and discovery at UPEI. . The Katherine Schultz Research Recognition Awards were created out of a gift received from Dr. Katherine Schultz, UPEI’s first Vice-President Research. Under her tenure from 2001 to 2012, UPEI enjoyed a seven-fold increase in research funding and intensity. A small reception will follow.
