Bullying is a form of harassment, but personal and more intense. It has always been a part of our culture and it doesn’t just happen on the school playground. In the workplace, bullying is more likely to occur where there is an authoritarian style of management, during times of restructuring and when there are excessive demands placed on individuals. It is a serious affliction that undermines productivity and morale. The worst examples occur in private. The UPEI Healthy Campus Committee, in conjunction with the Fair Treatment Office, invites all faculty, staff, and students to get involved in the annual Anti-Bullying Day by wearing pink on Wednesday, February 27. One person can change many.
UPEI’s executive MBA program offers a high-quality learning experience for working business professionals. The program is designed for those working in, or aspiring to work in, a management or leadership position. Classes are offered bi-weekly on Fridays and Saturdays with the option to complete the program in 20 months. Central to the program design is an evidence-based management approach which helps students develop the skills and knowledge to make better-informed and well-supported decisions both in the program and in applied situations in their workplaces. To learn more about the program and to meet with staff, faculty, and students from the School of Business, we invite you to attend the following information sessions: Tuesday, March 5 Provinces Lounge, Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, Charlottetown Any time between 4 and 6 pm Please call (902) 566-6474 or email mba@upei.ca to reserve a seat. For more information on UPEI's EMBA program, please visit http://business.upei.ca/mba
Erin McCauley, Department of Biomedical Sciences will give a seminar entitled "Microbial Communities Associated with the Larvae and Holobiont of Gorgonian Corals" on Tuesday, February 26 at 1:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre "C". Everyone is welcome.
Canadian journalist and author Gwynne Dyer will be speaking at UPEI on Monday, February 25 in the Duffy Science Centre, room 135. Gwynne Dyer has worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, broadcaster, and lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years, but he originally trained as a historian. Born in Newfoundland, he received degrees from Canadian, American, and British universities, finishing with a PhD in Military and Middle Eastern History from the University of London. His public lecture at UPEI will be "The Triumph of Non-Violence." Non-violent revolution is both more common and more successful in the modern world than the old and bloody version, but few people really understand it. This is an attempt to explain how and why it works. This event is free and all are welcome to attend.

UPEI faculty will “open” their classes to staff members from February 25–March 1, as part of “Open Class Week,” a new initiative that allows interested staff to sit in on a class and learn more about a topic. Employees will also gain a sense of what students experience when taking a UPEI course and what faculty experience when teaching one. Staff members are invited to visit the Google document for a full listing of courses available: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17sK95BhBxwtuWiXJ9EOe96VMIymdB2uGvSu… and to fill their name in one of the five available spaces for each course they are interested in. Spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Course descriptions can be found through UPEI’s academic calendar: https://files.upei.ca/calendar.pdf Class attendance for staff members is free and no course preparation is required. The deadline to sign-up for course dates is Thursday, February 21. Employees will be sent an email by the Faculty Development Office to confirm their class, time, and location. While senior management has been notified and fully support “Open Class Week,” it is highly recommended that employees advise their supervisors to prevent any scheduling concerns in their departments. For further information, please contact Gerald Wandio at the Faculty Development Office at gwandio@upei.ca.
