Campus Notices

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. UPEI will observe the day by lowering the flags in front of Kelley Memorial Building to half-mast.

This year the Montreal Massacre Memorial Service organized by the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women will occur online due to COVID-19. It will be broadcast at noon on Sunday, December 6, 2020, through Zoom. Everyone is welcome to join and tickets are free (link is external). This annual gathering honours the lives of women that have been lost to violence: PEI women, the 14 women of l’Ecole Polytechnique, and missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

The Chartwells UPEI culinary team, led by Executive Chef Dave Jenkins, will be serving up a special festive luncheon on December 16 from 11 - 2pm! You can view the menu below or visit dineoncampus.ca/upei for more info.

Reservations are highly encouraged to ensure we can accommodate you and your group during your desired dine-in time. Please contact Angela Gallant at 902-566-0720 or angela.gallant@compass-canada.com to make your reservations.

FestiveMeal2020

We usually see an increase in traffic at the UPEI Campus Food Bank in November and a pandemic year is no different. In September and October, we welcomed 200 students monthly. November saw an increase of close to 100 visits. Seasonal schedule changes and bubbles bursting in December leave several people nervous about food security. Stocking up is a common practice.

While you are already out shopping, why not add a few items to your shipping cart? Popular items are peanut butter, tuna, rice, pasta, spices, cereal, canned and frozen vegetable and fruit. An added candy cane or chocolate Santa treats are welcome also!

We are happy to arrange pick up at your campus work place if that helps! Work areas are coordinating efforts for food drive, Christmas stockings, and other surprises. I am an email away if you have questions or donation ideas.

Thanks to ITSS for our new phone and an app for contact tracing. Thanks to the Applied Human Science Society for weekly drop offs of baked goods. Thanks to our many volunteers who are present to our students each time we open.  And thanks to the many who designated their Giving Tuesday gift to the UPEI Campus Food Bank.

(BOOK NOW - DUE TO COVID-19, SPACE IS LIMITED TO 9 PEOPLE)

We are excited to announce our next group activity: PAINT NIGHT! We’ll be holding the event on December 4, 2020 at 7 pm with a maximum of 9 participants at Schurman Market Square in McDougall Hall. You’ll be provided paint, canvas, a brush, a glue stick, and lots of encouragement! Each participant will be given their own table (with social distancing followed) and will be encouraged to paint and chat with fellow members.

The theme for the night will be “My Identity”, which can be taken literally or just as an inspirational starting point. We will also have a few fun painting tips throughout the evening just to get your creative juices flowing!

Feel free to bring extra materials to make your painting extra fabulous (magazines, stickers, pom-poms - use your imagination!). Unfortunately, we won’t be able to share materials this time around because of COVID-19.

***We will be following all current COVID-19 protocols in place at the time of the event. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we won’t be able to provide snacks or drinks, but you are encouraged to bring your own.***

The Atlantic Canada Study and Stay - Prince Edward Island Program is seeking Volunteer Mentors.

Across the Island, there are 55 selected international students this year who would benefit from developing professional relationships with a volunteer mentor.

Mentors help our international students better understand workplace culture, improve their soft skills, and develop more connections on PEI. As a mentor, you'll be meeting with your assigned student 4–6 times between January 2021 and July/August 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all meetings will be conducted online.

It’s a good and rewarding feeling to support someone in our community and make a difference in someone's life. If you enjoy spending time with international students while helping create a more supportive community, we would like to invite you to sign up as a mentor here: https://atlanticcanadastudyandstay.com/atlantic-canada-study-and-staytm-prince-edward-island

Please help us share this information with your network. We appreciate your support. If you have any questions, please contact us at studyandstaypei@upei.ca.

The CBRC and Egale Canada have partnered on researching Access to Justice Study for 2SLGBTQIA+ People in Canada. Egale is currently focused on the experience of sexual minorities (e.g. lesbian women, bisexual people, gay men) in Atlantic Canada. It is their hope that you will share this study with your networks, or those who may be interested in participating in this type of study.

Egale is in the final phase of recruitment, which is ending December 15, 2020.

This study, available in both English and French, seeks to gather information about the legal experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people in Eastern Canada. The data gathered will help inform and change legal policies, practices, and services for LGBTQI2S people in Canada.

A link to the study can be found at https://egale.ca/legal-study along with additional information.

For anyone interested in participating, you can reach out to research@egale.ca for more information, or to arrange an interview.

To be eligible, participants must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have had a serious legal issue within the last three (3) years
