On Wednesday, February 19 at 12:00 pm, UPEI's Dr. Ed MacDonald will present an illustrated luncheon talk entitled "Cradling Confederation: The Founding of the Confederation Centre of the Arts" at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown. This presentation will introduce attendees to the story behind the Centre that is now celebrating its golden jubilee this year. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the Box Office at the Confederation Centre, http://www.confederationcentre.com/en/ More information on the presentation: Fifty years ago this year, in 1964, on the 100th anniversary of the historic Charlottetown Conference, the Fathers of Confederation Memorial Buildings were opened in Charlottetown as a living memorial to Confederation's founders. The arts complex cost $5.6 million, and was cost-shared on a per capita basis by the federal government of Canada and the Dominion's ten provinces. How the complex we know today as the Confederation Centre of the Arts came to be is a remarkable, even improbable story, of converging trends, clever salesmanship, backroom intrigue, and audacious national vision.

The campus community is invited to dance together to support the movement. Join us in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre from 12:15–1:00 pm. ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action in 2013 based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. One billion women and those who love them will walk out, dance, rise up, and demand an end to this violence. Learn more at www.onebillionrising.org. Both the Advisory Council on the Status of Women and PEI Family Violence Prevention Services (PEI FVPS) will be present as community representatives and supporters. Donations will be accepted in support of PEI Family Violence Prevention Services.
