The University has engaged an independent panel of three reviewers to conduct an assessment of programs and activities related to Island Studies. Panelists include Dr. Liette Vasseur of Brock University, Dr. Graham Whitelaw of Queen's University, and Mr. David MacDonald, PC. On July 25, Dr. Vasseur will visit UPEI to conduct the first site review and to meet with as many of the key stakeholders as possible. Interested members of the campus community are invited to an Open Campus Meeting with Dr. Vasseur on Thursday, July 25 from 3:00–4:00 pm in the main floor lounge area of Kelley Memorial Building. The Terms of Reference for the assessment are available upon request by emailing vpa@upei.ca.

As most of you know, Karen White retired last month from the Human Resources office. As such, Gillian Profitt has moved her office location to HR and can be reached at Karen's extension for any staffing or other HR related questions that you might have. UPEI has a new confidentiality agreement which is to be used for all fee for service contracts managed by the Comptroller's Office. The fee for service contract templates—found at http://www.upei.ca/vpfinance/comptroller/fee-service-contracts—have been updated to reflect the new confidentiality agreement. Please note that the contractor must sign both the fee for service contract and the confidentiality agreement. Thanks for your cooperation in this regard.
We will have a water shutdown of K.C.Irving Chemistry Centre on Tuesday, July 23 from 5:00–11:00 am. We also ask that nothing gets poured down the drains in the labs during this time. This shutdown is necessary to do some tie-ins for the new lab currently under construction. Please ensure that everyone in your department gets this notice. Please consider taking precautions based on the level of hazards in your specific area (e.g. using Bunsen burners/chemicals in labs, welding, etc.) where activities may increase the need to use sprinkler systems or safety eyewash/shower stations. Washrooms are available in the Robertson Library, Duffy Science Centre, or Andrew Hall. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. The UPEI Alumni Association is pleased to announce the recipients of its annual alumni awards. J. Armand DesRoches, SDU'63 will be presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award. This award commemorates a graduate for their outstanding contributions to knowledge, the arts, the community, and the university or humanity. J. Paul S. Young, BSc'02, BScR'07 & MBA'12 will be presented with the Inspiring Young Alumni Award, which honours a graduate, under the age of 40, who has shown outstanding determination in achieving success at a young age. The awards will be presented on Friday, July 26 at 3:30 pm in the Faculty Lounge, Main Building. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. The next UPEI on-site training session in animal use and care will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 1–4 pm, at AVC's McCain Foundation Learning Commons, Room 278N. This will be a 3-hour training session with handout, based on the Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) Recommended Syllabus (exam included). The CCAC requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing, and service take this course. (A refresher course is required every 5 years). Dr. Pushie's presentation is entitled “Computational Chemistry and Synchrotron Radiation Illuminate the Bioinorganic Chemistry of Human Health and Disease Pathogenesis." The seminar will be held in Room 104 in the KC Irving Chemistry Centre. All are welcome to attend!

Bernardine Hall We will be regrading the landscape on the north side of Bernardine Hall beginning on Wednesday, July 17; work is scheduled over an eight-day period, finishing on Friday, July 26. The work and schedule is weather- dependent. This work will be done by Island Coastal. McDougall Hall We will be doing waterproofing of the west side of McDougall Hall exterior foundation wall between rooms 124 and 129; it is scheduled to start on Wednesday, July 17. The work is scheduled over three days, finishing on Friday, July 19. The work and schedule is weather-dependent. Island Coastal and Atlantic Roofers will be doing the work. While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. There is a convenient, new way to purchase your parking permit at UPEI. Full-time and permanent part-time faculty and staff now have the opportunity to purchase non-expiring parking permits for gated designated parking lots B and C. While individuals who park in these lots must pay through payroll deductions, doing so eliminates the need to reapply each year. For general parking lots or AVC designated lot B, permits will continue to expire on August 31, requiring permit holders to reapply each year, as they do currently. UPEI parking is an ancillary service with a budget that is based entirely on cost recovery—no funding comes from the operating budget. While UPEI’s parking fees remain competitive, please be advised that they will be increasing because of rising maintenance and HST costs. 2013-14 parking permit applications will be available as of July 23, 2013, but for the new rates and more information on your permit options, visit http://www.upei.ca/facilities/services/get-staff-and-faculty-parking-pe….
The barrier-free entrance on the east side of Kelley Memorial Building will be closed beginning Monday, July 22. This closure is necessary to remove the existing ramp and rebuild a new one along with laying new non-slip flooring. The entrance will reopen on Thursday, July 25. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable.
