New Student Orientation, or NSO as it has existed at the University of Prince Edward Island will undergo some exciting changes this year. Beginning in the current year, NSO will begin under the new title of Orientation Week (O-Week) and be coordinated within the UPEI Student Union in collaboration with the UPEISU executive team and the V-P Academic Christian Lacroix. A week of events targeted at all incoming first-year students, Orientation Week 2013 will occur August 31 to September 5. Maintaining its chemical- and alcohol-free protocols, the week will be composed of both academic and social events. With the overall goals of orienting new students so they are better able to succeed at UPEI, make connections with one another, the rest of campus, and the surrounding community, Orientation Week plays an key role in a student’s experience at UPEI. Highlights from Orientation Week 2012 included: NSO Welcome Day $30,000 raised for Shinerama; Students Fighting Cystic Fibrosis NSO picnic on the residence fields Pancake breakfast at the Chaplaincy Centre Campus wide scavenger hunt Orientation Week is made possible with the help of nearly a hundred student volunteers which have been chosen and notified of their roles within the 2013 program. However, staff and faculty also play an important role in making Orientation Week a great success. I am pleased to announce a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Sustainability and Global Environmental Change to be staffed at UPEI. The challenges facing Prince Edward Island that arise from extreme weather, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, threats to biodiversity, energy self-sufficiency, resource scarcity, food security, employment security, et al. are increasingly pronounced in island environments around the world. These challenges are an opportunity to harness science and technology to foster a transition toward sustainability—toward patterns of development that promote human well-being while conserving life-support systems both locally and globally. The Chair will have a multidisciplinary approach to research in areas encompassing one or more of the following: Island Studies, Renewable Energy, Climate Change, Biodiversity, Sustainable Tourism, Sustainability Science, or Reorienting Education Towards Sustainability. Each area has the potential to position UPEI at the forefront of global change research as well as link partners, sectors, practitioners and citizens to advance expertise and application in critical sustainability areas. A CRC Application Review Committee for this opportunity is being convened and I would welcome your suggestions on members for this committee. Please contact me by email at rgilmour@upei.ca or phone 566-0637. More information on the Canada Research Chairs program may be found at www.chairs.gc.ca. Robert F. Gilmour, Jr. Vice-President Research

Like humans, pets can be affected by a variety of cancers. Many types of cancer in animals can be treated, and some can be cured. Dr. Pierre Amsellem, a small-animal surgeon at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), will discuss pets and cancer during a community workshop on Wednesday, May 29, from 7-8:30 pm in Lecture Theatre A. Dr. Amsellem is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and an ACVS Founding Fellow in surgical oncology. During the workshop, Dr. Amsellem will discuss the causes of cancer in pets, how to prevent and detect cancer, and new diagnostic and treatment options. He will also present the goals of treatment and quality of life issues of pets with cancer. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. This workshop is part of the 2013 AVC Community Workshop Series, presented by AVC Friends and Family, the college’s community-based volunteer organization.
