UPEI launches literacy and numeracy outreach project with a significant donation from Master Packaging
The UPEI Faculty of Education officially launched an Island-wide literacy and numeracy outreach project on Friday, November 18, 2022.
The project is supported by a generous donation of $750,000 from Master Packaging. In recognition of the company’s support, a plaque will be placed in Memorial Hall, where the Faculty of Education is housed, at the entrance to the educational learning commons, which now includes updated resources made possible through the project.
AVC alumnus receives prestigious Emerging Scientist Award
In August, Dr. Dennis Makau (PhD ‘19) was honoured with the prestigious Wayne Martin International Symposium for Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics (ISVEE) Emerging Scientist Award at the sixteenth international symposium.
UPEI representatives lay wreaths at Remembrance Day service
On Remembrance Day, November 11, people across Canada gathered on the eleventh hour to pay tribute to the veterans who serve their country—past and present.
Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor of UPEI, laid a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the University during the Charlottetown Remembrance Day Ceremony. He was accompanied by Acting/Sub Lt Cedric Stead, an officer with HMCS Queen Charlotte and a political science student at UPEI. The UPEI Student Union executive also laid a wreath. On the campus, the flags were lowered to half-mast.
Message from the President: Veterans' Week 2022
Dear Members of the University Community,
Each year during Veterans’ Week in Canada, we honour, pay tribute, give thanks, and remember the brave men and women who served—and who continue to serve—our country during times of war, conflict, and peace. We do this all week but in particular today, on November 8, Indigenous Veterans Day, and on November 11, Remembrance Day.
Message from the President: UPEI Faculty of Medicine Update

Dear Members of the University Community,
The development of the joint UPEI-Memorial Doctor of Medicine program has progressed a great deal over the last six months. Following our public town hall meetings and meetings with Indigenous groups in May, our committees ramped into high gear and have made tremendous strides in a number of areas.

UPEI names Paul Young Chief Operating Officer for new Faculty of Medicine
The University of Prince Edward Island is pleased to announce the appointment of alumnus Paul Young as Chief Operating Officer for the University’s new Faculty of Medicine, effective October 24, 2022.
“I am very pleased to welcome Paul back to UPEI,” said Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor. “His extensive experience and excellent leadership in the health care field will be instrumental as we move forward with the development of the new Faculty of Medicine.”
UPEI will re-open on Monday, October 3
As previously announced, UPEI’s Charlottetown and St. Peter’s Bay campuses will re-open on Monday, October 3, 2022. Classes, labs, and other campus operations will resume.
UPEI has lost five planned teaching days during the Fall Academic Semester. By restarting classes on Monday and recommending a minor adjustment to the December calendar dates to the University Senate, the fall reading week and semester will be preserved.
UPEI to keep warming/charging centres open over the weekend
UPEI will keep two warming/charging centres open from September 30-October 2 as follows:
- W.A. Murphy Student Centre, daily from 8 am-6 pm
- UPEI Chaplaincy Centre, daily from 8 am-5 pm
UPEI Facilities Management has been working non-stop and have made good progress clearing pathways and ensuring campus buildings are safe. At this point, it is our intention to open on Monday, October 3, 2022, as previously announced; however, we will send a message on Saturday, October 1, to confirm our status.

In consultation with the PEI Emergency Measures Organization, UPEI will remain closed until Monday, October 3, due to continued safety concerns, power outages, and other disruptions caused by tropical storm Fiona. Eighty per cent of Islanders remain without power.
