UPEI Wellness is pleased to announce a subsidy to cover the majority of the cost of small-group personal training. The first 50 UPEI employees to sign up for one of the following sessions will receive a $100 subsidy towards the 6-week session cost. Employee’s can pre-register for the remaining sessions for this budget year by completing the client information form and Par-Q found at http://ar.upei.ca/recreation/fitness/wellness. Schedule of events Thursday, February 7 (TONIGHT) Screening of CHASING ICE Come out for the first public screening in Atlantic Canada of the newly released, award-winning film CHASING ICE, an eye-opening documentary on climate change. The viewing will take place in AVC lecture Theatre A from 4:00-6:30 pm. A discussion, led by Dr. Adam Fenech, Director of UPEI’s Climate Research Lab, Dr. Douglas R. Bring your cheque book, as there will also be a silent auction, with a wide variety of items to choose from! These events help us raise funds for the Dr. Vianne Timmons International Student Award which promotes diversity on our campus and honours a deserving student. In light of the storm forecast for this weekend, the Faculty of Education International Specialization Dinner (scheduled for this Saturday, February 9, 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Jack Blanchard Family Centre) has been rescheduled to Friday, March 1, same time and location. The size and scope of research projects at UPEI has grown over the years. Sponsor requirements often make the task of administering a grant or contract complex and confusing. Besides these issues, UPEI has its own set of policies and procedures that need to be followed. Successful project administration and management is important to all the involved parties. If you are involved in administering a grant or contract (faculty or staff) and would like to discuss research project management, Dr. Robert Gilmour, vice-president of research, invites you to join him and the Research Services staff for lunch and a discussion about what you need as administrators in the way of information, training, and support. Dr. Dania Villarnovo, Department of Pathology and Microbiology, will give a seminar entitled "Avoiding Transfusions Reactions in Dogs: Evaluation of a Commercially Available Cross-matching Kit" on Tuesday, February 12 at 1:30 pm in AVC, Lecture Theatre "C". Everyone is welcome.

UPEI faculty will “open” their classes to staff members from February 25–March 1, as part of “Open Class Week,” a new initiative that allows interested staff to sit in on a class and learn more about a topic. Employees will also gain a sense of what students experience when taking a UPEI course and what faculty experience when teaching one. Staff members are invited to visit the Google document for a full listing of courses available: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17sK95BhBxwtuWiXJ9EOe96VMIymdB2uGvSu… and to fill in their name on one of the five available spaces for each course they are interested in. Spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Course descriptions can be found through UPEI’s academic calendar: https://files.upei.ca/calendar.pdf Class attendance for staff members is free and no course preparation is required. The deadline to sign up for course dates is Thursday, February 21. Employees will be sent an email by the Faculty Development Office to confirm their class, time, and location. While senior management has been notified and fully support “Open Class Week,” it is highly recommended that employees advise their supervisors to prevent any scheduling concerns in their departments.
