On Saturday, February 2 at 7:30 pm, the UPEI music faculty will be showcased in their annual gala concert at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. The concert is an opportunity for faculty members to perform some of their favourite repertoire as solo and ensemble musicians. The evening will feature solo performances by Karem J. Simon (clarinet), Jim Dickson (guitar), Morgan Saulnier (flute), and Frances Gray (piano). “Wonderland Duets” based on the poems of Lewis Carroll will be performed by Gregory Irvine and Robert Nicholson on tuba, with narrator Stephen Bouey and Jacqueline Sorensen who will join Frances Gray in Dvorak’s piano duet “Slavonic Dances Op.46.” Tickets are available at the door for $15/$10 (students/seniors). Everyone is invited to a public talk by author, storyteller, playwright S. Bear Bergman, on Friday, February 8, 2013, at 5:00 pm, in K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre 104, entitled “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Gender.” The talk will be followed by a question and answer period and a reception. This talk is the keynote address for the “Difficult Dialogues” student conference. For more information on Bear Bergman, please see his website: www.sbearbergman.com. We’ll also have a ‘who needs difficult dialogues?’ video corner and other exhibits. The event starts Friday, February 8 at 12:30 pm and continues all day on Saturday, February 9. Come to some sessions, come to all sessions, help us make this a great experience for everyone involved! Free and open to everyone! Registration starts at 12:30 on Friday in Main 520 (Dawson Lounge). UPEI’s synchronized swimming team will host their “Sync or Swim” fundraiser on Wednesday, January 30, 8–9 pm at the CARI complex. The team will showcase various routines as well as a highlight routine in which there are displays of incredible lifts and jumps. The UPEI men’s rugby club will perform their very own routine, which is sure to be entertaining. “Sync or Swim” tickets can be purchased for $10 or $8 (students), or $15 VIP (which includes on-deck seating and a special screening of the routines under water). Tickets are available from any UPEI synchro team member, or at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre on January 29 and 30, 11:30 am–2:00 pm. The Student Union is requesting that faculty and staff come out and express their (presumed) distaste for students by throwing a pie in the face of a member of their Student Union Council on Thursday, January 31 at 11:00 am, and paying for it with cash! So far on the docket we have: Kate VanGerven, Jonathan Millington, Chelsea Merry, Danielle MacDonald, Travis Gordon, Anastasia Smallwood, Logan MacMillan, Matthew Rice, Kylie Ford, Emiley MacKinnon, and more to come! Bids may be placed from 10:00 am- 2:00 pm in the WA Murphy Student Centre Tuesday, January 29, Wednesday, January 30, and Thursday, January 31!
