History of Agriculture on PEI
The Environmental Studies Book Club Discussion Series

This winter we will be reading and discussing "Time and a Place: An Environmental History of Prince Edward Island" (2016). Our discussions will probe into past and present environmental changes on PEI, and how and why the Islanders are particularly sensitive to environmental issues and enmeshed in their landscape in a way that is unique among Canadians.

During our third discussion we will talk about the history of agriculture on PEI and will focus on the chapters “The Fertile Crescent: Agricultural Land Use on Prince Edward Island, 1861-1971” by Dr. Joshua MacFadyen and “Agriculture and the Environment on Prince Edward Island, 1969-2014: An Uneasy Relationship” by Mr. Jean-Paul Arsenault.

We are thrilled that the authors, Dr. Joshua MacFadyen and Mr. Jean-Paul Arsenault, will join our discussion.

Date and time: March 14, 2019 at 4pm
Place: The Fox & Crow, W.A. Murphy Student Centre, UPEI campus.

All are welcome!

"Time and a Place: An Environmental History of Prince Edward Island" is available as an e-book at https://library.upei.ca/

If have any questions/suggestions, please feel free to contact Dr. Nino Antadze at nantadze@upei.ca

A free trial for a great service you really need is brilliant. Until you forget to cancel before the deadline and the subscriptions kick in. Does this sound familiar? Amazon prime, Disney, cable sports channels etc etc. These services keep charging until you TELL them to stop. Its easy...On your phone go to Google Play - Menu- Subscriptions - Manage - Cancel. DONE.
iOs (little harder) Settings - Apple ID - iTunes & App Store - Apple ID (again) - View the ID to get to the a/c info and scroll to subscriptions. Little more complicated but worth the $avings.
ITSS can help with any tech queries Mon-Fri 8-4.

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, April 5th for the April meeting.

Ensure you download the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/research-services/research-certifications/animal-care, use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms (only current forms will be accepted). To view any UPEI ACC SOPs and Polices, they can be accessed through myUPEI at https://portal.upei.ca/facultystaff/administrativeservices/AVCAnimalCare/Pages/default.aspx

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.
• Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept., Rm 2302

AS part of the Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences Seminar Program, Anayet Kabir will be giving a presentation on "Diatoms Loaded Self-assembled Nanomaterial for Drug Delivery".
A rapidly expanding field that utilizes nature-inspired materials to create novel and functional biomimetics is known as “Biotemplating”. The diatomaceous earth is an exceptional template for drug delivery applications, owing largely to its highly-ordered pores, large surface area, species specific architecture, and flexibility for surface modifications. Diatomaceous earth have been studied in a wide range of biomedical applications but their potential as the next frontier of drug delivery has yet to be fully exploited. Diatoms are porous silica-based materials obtained from single cell photosynthetic algae. We are evaluating the potential of diatomaceous earth (DE) microparticles for the duel delivery of drugs as cancer therapeutics. The study described the self-assembly of adamantine modified diatomaceous earth in β-cyclodextrin architecture to prepare thixotropic gels of varying mechanical properties. The gels produced exhibit excelled drug absorption capacity and colloidal stability under different pH. The co-encapsulation of drugs in diatomaceous earth containing thixotropic materials is studied and their in vitro anticancer activities are evaluated.

This event is Wednesday, March 13 at 12:30 pm in KC Irving Chemistry Centre room 104.

Join CLA & past Study Abroad participant, Kara Lamont, in the Campus Life Lounge for Coffee with a Stranger: Study Abroad Edition.

We will have snacks and drinks while talking about what it's like to participate in an international experience.

This event is Thursdday, March 14 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the Campus Life Lounge of Dalton Hall, room 514.

Expert and novice instructors alike find it challenging to write effective statements for assessment of learning. This workshop will provide you with some evidence for what is relevant and effective. It will provide you with a systematic approach for writing statements. And it will provide you with an alternative method to the standard learning outcome or objective. The workshop takes place on Tuesday, March 26th from 10:30 am to 11:30 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER
