Join Laura Simms, an award-winning performer, writer, and educator for an evening of storytelling. Laura received the Brimstone Award for Engaged Storytelling, CHOICE award for best story collection, and Sesame Street’s SUNNY DAYS award for work with children worldwide. Laura is the mother of Ishmael Beah, former child solider in Sierra Leone, and author of A Long Way Gone, an international bestseller. A reception with refreshments will follow. Tickets are $20 and include admission, light refreshments, and one drink ticket per person. A portion of every ticket sold will be used to raise funds for the Dr. Vianne Timmons International Student Award. Visit upei.ca/idw to purchase tickets.
Nominations are open for for the 2013–14 Katherine Schultz Research Recognition Awards. Nominations can come from individuals or groups of people and should be accompanied by a supporting document demonstrating the nominee’s contributions to research at UPEI. The award comes with a thousand-dollar prize. Nominees can be a UPEI faculty member, staff member, or volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the research enterprise at UPEI. The Scholarships and Awards Committee will accept nominations until March 1.
Dr. Karen Samis' seminar entitled "Why I came to PEI for the beaches and ended up in a ditch. The story of sea rocket and lupines" is cancelled for today, January 31.
On February 7 at 7:30 pm, join vocal director Sung Ha Shin-Bouey, guest vocalists, alumni soloists, and various vocal ensembles for an evening of music. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students/seniors, and are available at the door or in advance by calling 566-0507 or by emailing music@upei.ca

UPEI Men’s Basketball has teamed up with award-winning Kimberlee Farms of Centreville, Nova Scotia to raise funds for various UPEI athletic financial awards through the sale of honey crisp apples. The farm’s owner, Tim Pearson, is a long-time friend of UPEI Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tim Kendrick, and is also a Green & White Club member. Ten-pound bags of honey crisp apples will be sold for $20. Orders can be made through the men’s basketball players, or by visiting Panther Central. UPEI faculty are invited to submit nominations for appointments to the rank of Professor Emeritus. Please note that the criteria, and nominating and evaluation procedures were revised by Senate on June 14, 2013. These procedures can be found at https://files.upei.ca/misc/professor_emeritus_nomination_and_evaluation… The deadline to submit nominations has been extended to Friday, February 14, 2014. Nominations should be forwarded to Dr. Bill Whelan, Chair of the Professor Emeritus Evaluation Committee, Department of Physics, UPEI, 550 University Ave., Charlottetown, PE C1A 4P3. The Professor Emeritus Evaluation Committee will consider all nominees and forward its recommendations to Senate. Senate is the final approval body and will notify nominees of its decision. Inquiries may be directed to Dr. Whelan at wwhelan@upei.ca.

Please join us for Nicky Hyndman's public presentation on Thursday, February 6, from 9:30-10:30 am. Her presentation is entitled: "Doing homework, doing best?: Homework as a site of gendered neoliberal governance." The presentation will be held in the Faculty Lounge, Main Building. All are welcome to attend.
The next UPEI on-site training session in animal use and care will be held on Wednesday, February 19 from 1:00-4:00 pm in AVC's McCain Foundation Learning Commons, Room 287N. This will be a 3 hour training session with handout, based on CCAC Recommended Syllabus (exam included). The Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing, and service take this course. (A refresher course is required every 5 years.) Please notify Sherri Pineau by e-mail animalcare@upei.ca by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 12, if you or any of your staff will be attending this session.
