The campus community is invited to attend the 2013 Trudeau Lecture entitled: "Picking Up The Pieces: Seeking Out The Roots Of Violence Against Indigenous Women" on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall.
In the first Trudeau Lecture to come to the University of Prince Edward Island, beloved Métis author and playwright Maria Campbell, 2012 Trudeau Fellow, talks about the connection between her volunteering, her academic career, and her work in literature, theatre, and video to end violence against women. Growing up in a Road Allowance Métis community in northern Saskatchewan, Dr. Campbell witnessed the power that women in her community exercised, as well as the violence they experienced. A lifelong student of Indigenous oral history, she will speak to what she has learned of traditional ways that fostered respect and authority for Aboriginal women, and about how colonization disrupted those ways and introduced gendered violence.
Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

At the first Research on Tap of the season, join us for a discussion about where our concepts of good and bad come from. The discussion, “Morality is a Myth,” begins at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, October 1 in The Pourhouse, above The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse in Charlottetown. The discussion will be led by Dr. Malcolm Murray, professor of philosophy at UPEI.
“Morality is an evolutionary trait,” argues Murray. “It’s useful to the extent that it enables us as social creatures to live together in peace. But it is not something out there in the world that we discover. It is not innate. It’s something, like a sense of humour, we develop and value. The concept of morality as an objective fact in the world is a myth.”
Research on Tap is a series of public discussion led by UPEI researchers. For more information, contact Dave Atkinson at 620-5117 or datkinson@upei.ca.
For those interested in learning more about the New Moodle, please feel free to sign up for the sessions that will be taking place the first and second weeks of October. We will begin renovations in the lower level east end of Steel Building on Monday, September 30, which will include some walls being removed, new flooring in some rooms, ceiling repairs, and painting. Construction is expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete. The general contractor is WM&M (1993) Ltd. These renovations are to provide space for Kinesiology.
While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jackie MacPhail at 566-6034 or jmacphail@upei.ca.
