This is a beginner-level series that is hands-on, covering the fundamentals of Unix Shell, Version Control with Git and R. It covers the fundamentals of R, including data types, functions, importing, manipulating and analyzing data and data visualization as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using R in everyday tasks. You do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented or previous programming experience but intermediate-level experience with a computer is highly recommended.

It covers the fundamentals of Python including data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging, and using Python in everyday tasks. You do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented or previous programming experience but intermediate-level experience with a computer is highly recommended.

The University of Prince Edward Island will host an information session for students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or learning more about the new Faculty of Medicine and joint Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at UPEI in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland. The session will take place on Thursday, May 4, 2023, from 6:00–7:00 pm in the Kelley Memorial Building, Room 211.
There will be a general presentation and overview of the new Faculty of Medicine, followed by a Q&A session with UPEI representatives including Dr. Greg Naterer, Vice-President Academic and Research; Dr. Cathy Vardy, Executive Director, Medical Program Development; Jeff MacLean, Manager of Admissions; and Paul Young, Chief Operating Officer, UPEI Faculty of Medicine.
Pre-registration is not required for this session.

The Healthy Campus Committee provides two FREE Meditation and Yoga classes per week for UPEI faculty and staff. The 45-minute class offers meditation and gentle yoga stretches. The meditation segment of the class creates more calm, inner peace, and balance that benefits your emotional well-being and overall health. Yoga instructor Pam Harris Stewart leads the 12:10--12:55 pm class on Thursdays, and yoga instructor Colleen Gallant leads the 4:15--5:00 pm class on Tuesdays.

On Tuesday, May 2, Dr. Jin Y. Park, professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at American University, Washington DC, will give a lecture titled “Women in Contemporary Buddhism: Reflections on Korean Zen Master Kim Iryŏp.” The lecture will take place in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building, starting at 2:15 pm.
Dr. Park is the founding director of the Asian Studies Program at American University. She is the author, editor, or translator of 10 books and has published more than 60 articles in Buddhist studies and comparative religion. She is currently president-elect of the American Academy of Religion, the largest and most prestigious scholarly organization in religious studies. She is the first East Asian scholar to hold this position. She concurrently serves as president of the North American Korean Philosophy Association and has also been president of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy. She also held a visiting scholar’s position in Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, Germany, and Japan, and has delivered more than 200 talks around the world.
The 2023 Korean Studies International Speaker Series is supported by the global Seed Program for Korean Studies and Laboratory Program for Korean Studies grants through the Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea, and the Korean Studies Promotion Service, Academy of Korean Studies.

Most of us have experience using a computer, whether for school, work, or entertainment, but how many of us have actually had an expert teach us how to use it? This talk won't teach you how to troubleshoot everything, but will give you insight to how media, programs, and data are encoded and used by computers, so you can make more sense of why computers behave the ways they do, and solve some of your problems with greater efficiency and less frustration. We will provide an approachable overview of how a computer works, by both looking at their history and breaking one down to explain individual components, before highlighting some of the trade-offs to consider when buying a computer. We will provide practical, simple, and actionable advice on digital security and show you a few "pro tips" on how to make the most of your workstation, phone, or whatever device you happen to use. Whether you have a lot or a little experience using your digital technology, if you want to learn how to use your devices more effectively, this workshop is for you!
